Statement - Sandra Andersson

During the past year I`ve been working with sound. Last spring I participated in a soundcourse att The academy of Music and Drama. I have worked with vibrations and glass to bring foward the influence of sound and participated with the project in LARM´s book, From mouth cavity to laptop, and archive (www.larm-festival.se).
In september 2006 me and Helen Tak started a collaboration, the sound project VooM. We are intrested in reactions and behaviour when hearing certain sounds. VooM has so far participated at the interantional light exhibition, Lights in Alingsås, october 2006 and will continue our work for the exhibition at BotnikStudios. Since photography is my main occupation the big struggle has been to handle all the technique that comes with sound and sound installations so thats what I`m doing right now, learning a lot of stuff about circuit-bending, soldering and sound editing.

The artificial and ambiguous fascinate me. I find inspiration in the fictitious and constructed. I often search for areas with a strong character (both in a literally and conceptual sense) in my everyday surroundings to explore. The surrealistic is playing a significant part through my projects, investigating what would happen if erasing the line between fiction and reality.   An attempt of creating curiosity and understanding towards ourselves, our behaviour, the trite and ordinary. Photography is often used as a base in my work, but depending on the development of the project it can also be presented as installation and sound.

My interest when it comes to sound began in summer 2004. During that time I went through a very unpleasant experience. The hearing on my left ear began to disappear and I also got tinnitus. My condition is possible to control by surgery, but the entire situation made me very aware of sounds and also of silence. I often use questions regarding awareness as a starting point in my work.
